Prophecies

Visions,

&

Dreams

When it comes to visions, dreams and prophecies from God, there are many who don't believe that such things exist in this modern era that we live in. Those in secular society would relegate such notions as something that is to be considered as a psychic phenomenon or mere fantasy/human fiction or creative imagination.  There are those who are of the Christian faith who believe such supernatural things do not occur among believers; it died out with the saints and apostles of old. However, if one reads the scriptures carefully we should all come to the understanding that Holy Spirit inspired visions, dreams and prophecies are very much for today and this current generation. The Bible declares in (Acts 2: 16-18), "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel; and it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams: And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy." The 'last days' are the days that we are currently living in now. So for some believers to say that having such visions, dreams or prophecies from the Father is non-existent and/or not for our time, is someone who is not consistent and/or receptive to biblical thought and truth in this area. God speaks to and through His people by His Spirit and He is not limited to any time period or dispensation in order for His will to be accomplished.

WHAT IS A VISION, WHAT IS A DREAM?

Visions from the Lord occur frequently in the Bible as instruments of supernatural revelation. They are audiovisual means of communication between a heavenly being and an earthly recipient. The terms used to designate visions in both Testaments have to do with seeing or perceiving. The Old Testament terms for vision (the Hebrew verbs 'raa' and 'haza' and their several noun derivatives) mean simply to look at or to see. In the New Testament, 'horao' is one of the Greek verbs for see, observe, or perceive, but its related noun (horama) is the common term for "vision." Revelatory visions portray scenery or dramatic circumstances to the human recipient while the human is awake. The distinction between a vision and a dream has to do with whether the human is awake or asleep; the result is the same. Visions can be “open visions” when the person sees something when fully awake, but not with their natural eyes. It’s like images are superimposed over the natural world and it gives a glimpse into other realms by the Spirit. Other types of visions can be seen in one’s mind’s eye and are just as valid. A "seer" was the Old Testament name for those who regularly received communications from God in this way. All seers were prophets. A dream from God occurs when the individual receiving the dream from the Lord is asleep. It can have a few elements of "story" in it so it makes some sort of rational sense to our mind and we attain some sort of understanding, but there are many times that it takes someone with a gift of interpretation of dreams and visions to pray and interpret it correctly. This is done in order that the truth/messaged conveyed in the dream/vision is given to whom it's intended for, be it an individual or a corporate body. The prophetic use of dreams and visions is summarized in the Lord's dramatic defense of Moses in the face of Aaron and Miriam's revolt: "Then He said, Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream" (Numbers 12:6).

WHAT IS PROPHECY?

By definition a prophecy is an inspired utterance from a prophet, viewed as a revelation of divine will or one who is divinely inspired to declare what is to come in the future. It's a proclamation of the future made under divine inspiration and such an inspired message or prediction can be transmitted orally or in writing. Prophecy can involve much more. It may be an inspired moral teaching, or an expression of a divine command or judgment. Prophecy incorporates foretelling, which is saying what the future will be before it happens and forth-telling, which is proclaiming truth (or news).  We see this from great bible prophets such as Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Enoch, Lamech, Noah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Malachi, so on.

Visions, dreams and prophecies from the Lord, are definitely for this generation because God is moving upon His people by His Spirit in these final hours of human history, to bring in the end-time harvest. Any visions, dream or prophecy given must always be taken to the Lord in prayer to confirm it's validity and to ensure it does not violate the core tenets of the Christian faith, and/or biblical truths of the Gospel. The underlying message of the prophetic dreams, visions or words must ultimately line up with the Word of God. Be blessed and encouraged as you read/view the various dreams, visions and/or prophecies given by God to those the Lord has chosen to impress upon by His Spirit. Many of theses messages are decades old, some may be centuries old, some are yet to be fulfilled, others have partially been fulfilled.. but all uttered by the Power and Presence of God, to the Glory of God.
